Fortunately enough I got to meet the Chief Executive Officer of DBS Bank in Singapore. The talk was organized by the Singapore Gujarati Society and went on for about an hour. The seminar was highly inspiring and educational. Mr.Gupta is an IIT graduate, (Indian Institute of Technology) which is a matter of great deal. Its one of the top universities of India and produces intelligent talent. Coming from India and working for Citibank for the longest time and then taking over DBS in Asia Pacific makes Indians all around the world very proud.
A few pointers from the talk which are stored in my memory is one of the things which Mr.Gupta pointed out about the youth’s obsession with technology and how tech savvy he is. When asked about his interest in reading books, he mentioned the book ‘Sapiens’ by Yuval Noah Harari is a must read. When asked upon his preference in soft copy or hard copy, he replied “I don't prefer reading on Kindle as knowing whats on page number 86 interests me more than knowing that I am on 86% battery”.
One of his believes as the chairman which I was highly inspired by was to make the consumers live’s easier and they are the core. He suggested a concept for future bankers of looking into the consumers issue then and there by minimizing their call and solving their problem instantly. His belief of being a ‘coattail’ at the firm you work at took me by surprise and made me wander. It means that we should hang on to someone at our workplaces and provide them with an advantage of our presence so they pull us up with them for us to reach greater heights.
He ended his speech by saying “Singapore is First World Infrastructure in a third world region” and rightly so he added, giving the audience a piece of advice, “ If your luck meets fate, its better to join a company when it’s underperforming”.
